// JEEP DRIVETRAIN & AXLES — QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What gear ratio do I need for 35s or 37s on a Jeep?
For 35-inch tires, 4.56 gears restore factory feel on a JL/JK; for 37s, go 4.88 or 5.13. Automatic transmission and heavy armor push you toward the deeper (numerically higher) ratio.
What is the difference between a locker and a limited-slip?
A locker forces both wheels on an axle to spin together for maximum traction — essential on rocks. A limited-slip only partially transfers torque and can still spin one wheel when flexed off-camber.
Do I need chromoly axle shafts for my Jeep?
If you run 35+ inch tires with lockers on rocky trails, chromoly shafts are cheap insurance — roughly 30–40% stronger than factory shafts, which are the most common breakage point on hard-wheeled Dana 44s.
